Quarterly Market Review July - September UK

Welcome

Arrivals to South Africa from the UK grew by 1.3% in July 2009. Compared to the sharp declines experienced by competitor destinations in this market, this is a significant gain.

However, year-on-year, arrivals are in decline.  We have been fortunate to have a number of sporting events that have, and will help, raise the profile of the destination and boost arrivals.  But we can by no means rest on our laurels.

The team is working doubly hard to support the trade with initiatives that drive sales.  Our initial push took place in September and will continue until the end of the fiscal.

Recovery Strategy
The UK team has been working to support operators in this market with sales-driven campaigns.

The first 2 activities were an advertorial in the Daily Mail, and an online advertorial on Travel Zoo.

Our thanks go to the South African operators who assisted with this project.

Consumer Evenings
We participated in 2 consumer evenings with Premier Travel and Holidays, and the results have been phenomenal. Forty passengers have booked holidays to South Africa as a result.

Media and Public Relations

  • Media Hosting
We hosted a number of British Media to South Africa resulting in positive coverage for the destination.  Themes for the hosting included: the ICC Champions Trophy, a flower tour to the Western Cape and adventure for the Irish media.

  • Media Meetings
We placed particular focus on the Business Tourism media in this quarter.  We met with each of
the media houses that produce publications for this market, and each has undertaken to attend Meetings Africa 2010 and run a feature on South Africa in the lead up to the event.

  • A taste of South Africa
Consumer journalists were invited to the Good Housekeeping Institute to savour a taste of South African flavours. Journalists had the opportunity to speak to a chef about how to prepare classic South African dishes like malva pudding and frikkadels.
